Anarchy reigns supreme in the realm of Britain, more supreme even than the King. Poor harvests, mysterious illnesses, and constant coastal raids from the dreaded Saxons have plunged the once-paradiscial kingdom into disarray, disgrace, and distrust in the kingdom’s monarch, Arthur Pendragon, and his legendary Knights of the Round Table. Arthur’s priority has been to consolidate his centralized power through high taxes and a tight grip on “justice” in order to maintain Camelot’s stability as his seat of power. Any critics of the sovereign rule have been quickly silenced by Arthur’s knights, led by Sir Lancelot, notorious for his violent loyalty to the throne. Arthur’s claim to the throne rests in his iron fist and his holy ritual of taking a nightly draft from the Holy Grail, which some say delivers him a Divine right to rule.

In an effort to raise the now-depressed morale of his Kingdom, Arthur sent his Knights on bold quests which, he thought, would remind the commonfolk of his great abilities as a ruler. Sir Bors was sent to the far North to eliminate the Black Knight, an entrenched local warlord. Sir Galahad was sent West to vanquish Morgan LeFay, Arthur’s old nemesis, the shapeshifting sorceress. Sir Percival was sent into the Holy Land to retrieve a fragment of the Original Cross. Sir Bedevere was sent to the South, to exterminate the fearsome Red Dragon, breather of flames. Finally, Sir Gawain was sent across the sea to conquer the Saxon capitol, in terrible Dresden. Lancelot Arthur kept at home, to enforce the rule of law in Camelot.

Though these quests, successfully completed, may have restored public faith in the House of Pendragon, Arthur’s plan backfired. In the absence of his Knights, Arthur’s critics grew louder and more organized. Led by the self-monickered Lady Malegant, a commoner of illiterate farmer stock, an anti-Arthur movement sparked, swelled, and overwhelmed the country. At the same time, Merlin, Arthur’s most trusted advisor, has taken terribly ill, retreating to his remote tower chambers, mysteriously refusing to consort with anyone other than Dagonet, the court’s jester.

Terrified of Malegant’s rebellion and largely out of allies, Arthur recalled his Knights from their quest, each incomplete. The Knights arrived at Camelot on the climatic eve of Malegant’s insurgency. Her mobs surrounding the keep, she issued a formal challenge to Arthur for the throne– a Joust at the following midday. Sir Lancelot boldly took the role of Champion, planning to duel the mutineer matriarch.

The keep in tumult, preparations abounded on that fateful night. The beloved and cunning Lady Guinevere led the keep’s preparation, Dagonet entertained aristocrats visiting from afar, and Merlin, now completely cloistered, muttered to himself in the high tower, and the usual castle Peasants sulked in their filth. The only resident missing was young Amr, Arthur’s only legitimate son and heir to the throne. Missing, that is, until he was found, cold and dead in Arthur’s bedchamber by his very own Mother. As tradition demands, Merlin will perform an inspection of the Royal’s body before he is given his last rites. Who could have been behind this treacherous plot? How did young Amr meet his untimely fate? How will this change the Joust between Malegant and Lancelot? When the dust settles, who will sit on the throne of Camelot?
